As a material that can be molded to any shape and used in a variety of applications, liquid polyurethane is a popular plastic with a wide range of uses. Polyurethane is a flexible, resilient, chemical resistant and odorless material that has many advantages over other common plastics. It can be made into foam, coatings, adhesives and sealants. Polyurethane is produced using a complex process that begins with mixing two types of monomers: polyols and polymeric isocyanates, which are then reacted together by a high temperature reaction.
Once the mixture of liquid polyurethane is ready to use, it can be poured into a mold and then placed in a machine that heats and presses the material to create a finished product. The type of mold required depends on the final application and desired results. Injection molding is commonly used to produce automotive parts, furniture, computer and telecommunication equipment enclosures, and many other products.

The final cured product can be flexible or rigid depending on the needs of the project. Rigid urethanes have higher hardness ratings and are better suited for making car bumpers, doors, and spoilers. Flexible urethanes, on the other hand, are more pliable and can be easily formed around curves and corners of objects.
It is important to properly prepare surfaces before applying urethane. Surfaces must be clean and free of dirt and oils, and blasted or roughened to promote adhesion. For repeated molds that will be exposed to sunlight, it is recommended to mix in UV Additive (sold separately) into the liquid urethane before pouring to protect against damage.
