How to teach English for primary students?
The first stages of primary are a huge adjustment for many young learners, and it’s understandable that parents feel nervous about their little one’s ability to make the transition. In elementary English classes, students will focus on basic reading and linguistic / communication skills. They’ll practice periods of silent sustained reading, cursive writing, and explore the basics of grammar – such as word formation, parts of speech, and sentence diagramming.
They’ll also learn to identify details and main ideas in written texts, as well as to make predictions, inferences, and responses to those texts. And they’ll start to learn how to read more complex text types such as novels, plays and poetry.
They’ll expand their vocabularies with new words through a variety of reading activities, including thematic reading and writing. And they’ll be encouraged to express themselves creatively through writing a range of text types, from narratives and letters to essays. They’ll also be expected to develop a strong grasp of punctuation and the appropriate use of verb tense.
